Service and Outreach
Jesus teaches the greatest commandment is to love God with everything we are and to love others as ourselves. (Matthew 22:37-38, Mark 12:29-31, Luke 10: 27). First Lutheran takes this responsibility very seriously. Because of our location, we believe God is calling us to especially serve the homeless and support the downtown community.
The Crossing
The Crossing Nutrition Center Volunteer Wednesdays and/or Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to help hand out food to those in need. www.crossing-outreach.org
Community Missions
Parking is available in two lots:
Immediately south of the church (driveway on 10th Street, just north of Sylvanie Street).
Concerta Urgent Care parking lot, 904 Edmond St, St. Joseph, MO 64501. This lot does not belong to First Lutheran but is available for use on Sunday mornings and other occasions when there is a large gathering.
In addition, parking is available on both sides of 10th Street.
Grace House
Grace House Every year we partner with Grace House to help prepare children to return to school with backpacks full of school supplies. Volunteer at Grace House by sorting clothes and other jobs. (20+) Facebook
Youth Alliance
Youth Alliance First Lutheran hosts graduation for the young adults who are receiving their high school equivalency and who are graduating from the nursing assistant, culinary and pre-apprenticeship construction programs. Volunteer to mentor young parents or workers in their place of employment or to help lead a service project with the Youth Volunteer Corps. www. youth-alliance.org (pic of girl in grad hat attached)
Haven House
St. Joseph's Haven houses 18 chronically homeless men in 9 semi-private suites. First Lutheran has committed to preparing and serving dinner at the Haven House every fourth Tuesday of the month. Over 20 people are served every evening and they are always accepting more food and volunteers.
Imagine Eleven
Imagine Eleven Summer Concert Series. First Lutheran hosts this summer concert series every year beginning in June and ending in August. Our goal is to connect music, service and community.
